History

The land on which Kensington now sits was initially colonized by Dutch farmers in the seventeenth century. Kensington was then resettled by British colonists in 1737. Kensington is named for a borough in West London, and was developed in 1885, following the completion of Ocean Parkway. Ocean Parkway, which begins in Kensington was completed in 1880. The Parkway features nearly five miles of landscaped malls, benches, chess tables, walking, and bike paths. Ocean Parkway connected Prospect Park to Coney Island, and is now considered part of the Brooklyn-Queens Greenway. Home construction and residential development took off in the 1920’s, and drew Italian and Irish immigrants to the neighborhood.

Today, Kensington is a predominantly residential area with increasingly diverse housing. Kensington is also demographically diverse. The neighborhood is home to African-American, Ukrainian, South Asian, Chinese, Hasidic, Irish, Polish, Italian, Albanian, Russian, Latino, Mexican, Australian and Caribbean residents, among others.
