When the weather is nice, stop by Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, a local farmer's’ market, for environmental education and programming, community events, and locally sourced produce.
History of Park Slope
The area now known as Park Slope, was first inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe, and was later colonized by the Dutch in the 17th century. On August 27, 1776, in the midst of the Revolutionary War, the Battle of Long Island was fought in Park Slope. The historic battle site is now preserved in Prospect Park. Park Slope continued to grow through and beyond the 1850’s, with the introduction of the railcar, making the neighborhood a streetcar suburb of New York City. From 1879 to 1889, the Brooklyn Atlantics, the team that would later come to be called the Dodgers, played in Park Slope’s historic Washington Park.
